Overland Track, Tasmania - Day 2

Waterfall Valley Hut to Windermere Hut
Distance Hiked 7km/4.3 miles

This was the shortest day we hiked but also the most miserable. I use the word miserable loosely because even as the snow/sleet/ice/rain pelted us in the face I was still loving every minute if it. We had actually planned on making this day our longest and continuing on to the next hut making it a 9 hour day. But by the time we arrived at Windermere Hut I was soaking wet from head to toe, my boots were sloshy and I was starting to get cold. We arrived at the hut at about 1pm and decided to take off the wet clothes and relax, starting again the next morning.

Even through my limited view with my rain hood on- the views were breathtaking. Walking along high bluffs, past waterfalls and lakes. It was lovely to be a part of.

Did I mention it was wet?

Did I mention the snow?

A brief moment of sunshine

Arriving at Windermere Hut

Feels so good to be in my dry thermals

We found a nest with baby pink crested swallows in it by the toilets

Compostable toilets were at every hut. Very nice and barely noticeable smell.

Another wonderful day. A bit wet, but a wonderful day.

Overland Track, Tasmania - Day 1

"The Overland Track is Tasmania's best known walk and has become a mecca for walkers from all parts of the globe. The track winds its way through Cradle Mountain- Lake St Clair National Park crossing exposed alpine plateaus, passing through dense forests and alongside tranquil lakes and tarns. The track passes many of the highest peaks in the state of Tasmania which is one of the world's most mountainous islands."

elevation levels throughout the track

Day 1 Craddle Valley to Waterfall Valley Hut
Distance Hiked 10.4 km/6.5 miles

I will have to say this adventure was the hardest, greatest, most memorable thing I have done to date. It was absolutely fabulous to have been given the opportunity to travel to Tasmania and hike the Overland Track. I went into the hike expecting to not enjoy myself to much, just wanting to get it over with to say I did it. But pretty much right away I was hooked and in love- it was far harder then I imagined it would be, I mean all the pictures show people walking on nice boardwalk paths, how hard could that be, right? About the time I was scaling a rock wall with my pack on, hanging onto a chain link railing to hoist myself up- I knew this would not be that easy. But is was far more enjoyable also.

Our first day of hiking started out pretty late in the day- 1pm- due to having to take a bus from the backpackers hostel we stayed at the night before- it took a while to get to the start of the track. It was rainy and cold the entire first day of walking, quite miserable by most standards but very exhilarating at the same time.

first days journey
The red dot I am pointing at is where we slept the first night- Waterfall Valley Hut

My Pack- all 18kg/40lbs of it
complete with everything I would need to survive for 6 days

It was a rainy, cold day

A Spotted Quoll we saw at Kitchen Hut

View of Cradle Mountain the day we were suppose to climb it- of course the weather preventing us from climbing that day

Walking on a section of boardwalk along the trail

Me climbing up a steep rock section, hoisting myself up
with the help of a chain link railing to grab.
Crater Lake in the background

An old hut at Crater Lake

By one of the many waterfalls we encounter on the track

Waterfall Valley Hut- our first night
there were 4 platforms, sleeping 6 on each one- you are no longer shy about sleeping next to strangers after that- and even less shy about nudging them when they snore.
The eating area where we cooked our food
(the pics of the hut are foggy because the camera was a little cold)

On that first day, in all the rain, I had to get over the fact that my boots were not only going to get a little wet but my boots were going to be wet the entire six days of hiking. and muddy (more picks on the mud on day 4).

So that's a wrap up of day 1, stay tuned for tomorrow for day 2 wrap up.

The love of her life

The other weekend I had a get together with a bunch of my friends at my house. Antonia, who is Cooper's mum, was there. If you remember Cooper- he is chesney's best mate/future husband. Anyway, Cooper send his mum with some flowers for her to give Chesney. How sweet is that?

Just can't get enough

Of the beach that is. Specifically, Freshwater beach. It is our favorite place to spend the weekends. Nice breeze, cool water to splash in, abundant sand to play in....what more could we ask for.
Cool racing car build by dad

Beautiful mermaid and fish eating Logan
Chesney felt adding breasts to her mermaid added a bit of charm, don't you think?

A group of nippers kids ready to run in the water to practice.

We just can't get enough.

The wants of the teenager

Chesney has put together a bag of must haves for when she is a teenager. I would say these are pretty much the same things I wanted as a teenager.

Halloween Fun........And More

We came, we saw, we left with bags of candy. One thing I have to say for America is- we sure know how to do Halloween. It's everywhere..... from the vampire teeth your kids gag on
and the A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E Raggedy Ann costume on my sweet niece- Annabelle
The Obi Won Kanobi Logan HAD to have for his costume (complete with Obi's stance while he is in battle)
And the precious black cat that we just adored
The assortment of Characters begging for candy on the streets of Lanesboro
The scary house the kids were not so sure they wanted to go to but changed their minds when they noticed the full-size candy bars they would receive if they did
The autumn festival attended

The pumpkins carved

The scooping out of the insides

and Logan saying "That's disgusting" at the thought of putting his hand in and getting it out.

and that was just one day.

then there was the parties at Norstads
Complete with balloons
the cuddles with cousins
Hikes to waterfalls

More cuddles with cousins
Pottery painting
And Chesney's birthday cake baking (which by the way was pretty friggin awesome)

We had a great time seeing everyone and catching up- We will see you again.......someday
